Book haul: hand-me-downs from my parents and other finds

My mom and I got the inspiration to go through the closet of boxes of books the other day, and I made out with some books that my mom and dad owned, read, and love.

When we moving into where we live now, my mom and dad had all of their boxes of books in a storage unit. The day we moved in, we had tons of sorting of boxes to do. When on of our movers would ask where to put yet another box of books, my mom and dad had them put them in the linen closet. They've been there since October until just now.

We took out a few boxes at a time, taking out the books we want to have out, and reorganizing the rest back into boxes and back into the closet yet again. There are plans of going through them another time to get rid of some, selling the ones in best condition and donating the others to thrift stores or to Goodwill.

The three books that are upright are books of my dad's, and the others are my mom's. Dad has a lot of books from library sales and clearance sections from bookstores which is why the three from him are in the condition they're in. They are The Shining by Stephen King, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, and Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card.

Mom has been pressuring me to read and watch The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory and Ashes in the Wind by Kathleene Woodiwiss for a while now, and the others are classics I had no idea we had that I've been keeping my eye out for to buy for myself. I'm glad I won't have to now, since I have the hand me down paperbacks! :)

The top two books my mom recommended me based on what I just finished reading, and The More Than Complete Hitchhiker's Guide is my dad's that is still his but on my bookshelves.

Then of course I can't resist a nice reference book about words. If I hadn't pulled these out of the boxes they would have been put back to collect dust again until the next time we go through them. I love words and I didn't have the heart to put them back away.

I meant to take a picture of the closet before and after style but I didn't, but I still might take a photo of all the remaining boxes and edit this post in the future and include it.

Do you have any hand me down books, or a closet of books you need to go through? I definitely 10/10 would recommend doing that, it's more fun than it is work!

  1. I'm cracking up at the Woodiwiss book! My mother-in-law told me she named my husband after a character in one of her books, so I bought it and read it. The guy starts out as a ship captain who rapes a girl on board! But I'm told it's okay, because then they fall in love! So I just laugh every time I remember this or see her books!

    1. The funniest thing about Woodiwiss books to me are the synopses on the backs, and my all-time favorite always will be from The Flame and The Flower: "Heather and Brandon's stormy saga reaches the limits of human passion as we follow Heather's tumultuous journey from poverty. From her kidnapping to the splendor of a Carolina plantation where Brandon finally probes the depths of her full womanhood."

    2. That's the character my husband is named after - Brandon!!! Now you know why I crack up every time I see one of her books! (Although I've read a few of them!)
